Andy Wirth, better known as the CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings was born in July of 1963 in Neubrucke, West Germany. Shortly after graduating, Wirth worked as a backcountry ranger for the Rocky Mountain National Parks and also as a wilderness ranger for San Pedro Parks Wilderness area. Wirth holds a Bachelor of science degree and has worked with and for several ski resorts.
His career began in 1986 as he interned with Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation. Wirth would go on to work for Steamboat for another 20 years before his career at Squaw Valley began. Eventually, Wirth moved through different positions in Steamboat which eventually was acquired by a parent company, Intrawest in 2006.
The acquisition took 265 million dollars to complete and it was at this time that Andy Wirth was named chief marketing officer and executive vice president of sales and marketing. Wirth became very active in Steamboat Springs, where he was serving as chairman of the board of directors of the companies winter sports club. This particular sports club is a 100 year old institution that has helped develop winter sports competitions and events.
In 2010, Wirth was appointed as the President and CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Resort, replacing Nancy Cushing. This was a drastic change in leadership, as the Squaw Valley resort had only ever been lead by a member of the Cushing family. After Wirth took over the company, a 70 million dollar upgrade was made to the resort.
The changes ranged from improved mountain infrastructure to general mountain designs, making the resort more interesting, challenging and safe. Wirth’s passion and drive led the resort from being placed at the bottom 20 ski resorts worldwide to the top 20. In 2011, Squaw Valley announced a merger with Alpine Valley ski resorts to ensure a better customer experience through a combined pass. This move would prove to be highly successful for both companies.
